Water Project Bali
Crisis
In Muntigunung, Northeast Bali, drinking water can be so scarce that village women have had to beg for water. During the dry season, where temperatures can reach a high of 40 degrees, women need to spend anywhere between 3 and 5 hours a day carrying water back to their families.
Solution
After nearly ten years of effort by the Bali Water Project from the Swiss NPO Future for Children there are now 17 out of 36 villages with sustainable water supplies that have helped in the creation of self-sustaining industries providing employment in the production of food such as cashew nuts and tea. Bali hotels purchase products from the villages ensuring the creation of financial income in the locality. This is a welcome addition to the water cycle, as we knew it.
Our Contribution
Currently these villages have 25l of water per person per day, and the result of not having to search and carry water for several hours means the children are free to go to school and the adults to work. We are happy to have been able to help funding two water tanks in 2014 and two in 2015 to harvest rainwater and bring about this change in the lives of those affected.
